Mit seinen Protestliedern prägte Country Joe McDonald das legendäre Woodstock-Festival und wurde zur Ikone der Gegenkultur. Seine Songs gehörten zu den bissigsten Protestliedern der 60er-Jahre. Die Performance seines Protestliedes „I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die Rag“, einem sogenannten Talking Blues, beim Woodstock-Festival zählt zu den Höhepunkten der ikonischen Veranstaltung. Für das Ausbuchstabieren des Schimpfwortes „F-U-C-K“ bekam er Ärger. Ursprünglich lautete die Stelle „F-I-S-H“ – nach seiner Psychedelic-Rock-Band Country Joe and the Fish –, doch zum Zeitpunkt von Woodstock befand sich die Band kurz vor ihrer Auflösung. In Massachusetts wurde er wegen der Aussprache des obszönen Wortes sogar verhaftet. Am Ende musste er eine Geldstrafe zahlen.
With his protest songs, Country Joe McDonald made his mark on the legendary Woodstock Festival and became an icon of counterculture. His songs were among the most biting protest songs of the 1960s. His performance of his protest song ‘I Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag’, a so-called talking blues, at the Woodstock Festival is one of the highlights of the iconic event. He got into trouble for spelling out the swear word ‘F-U-C-K’. Originally, the line was ‘F-I-S-H’ – after his psychedelic rock band Country Joe and the Fish – but at the time of Woodstock, the band was on the verge of breaking up. He was even arrested in Massachusetts for uttering the obscene word. In the end, he had to pay a fine.
