Wie der Nachrichtensender CNN mitteilte, ist dessen Gründer Ted Turner im Alter von 87 Jahren verstorben. Er hatte bereits vor mehreren Jahren öffentlich gemacht, dass er an Demenz leidet. 1980 gründete Turner in der Metropole Atlanta im US-Bundesstaat Georgia das Cable News Network (CNN). CNN startete damals bereits mit 10 Büros und über 200 Mitarbeitern. Dieser Sender war der erste, der rund um die Uhr Nachrichten sendete. Er prägte einen neuen Stil der Fernsehnachrichten. Zu Turners Fernsehimperium gehörten daneben unter anderem die Sport- und Unterhaltungssender TBS und TNT, der Kinofilmsender Turner Classic Movies (TCM) und der Zeichentricksender Cartoon Network. Turner war außerdem im Wrestlinggeschäft tätig und Besitzer der Liga World Championship Wrestling (WCW), deren TV-Shows Wrestling weltweit populär machten. Zwischenzeitlich besaß er auch das Hollywood-Filmstudio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) und dessen Tochterfirma United Artists (UA).
As reported by the news channel CNN, its founder Ted Turner has died at the age of 87. He had publicly revealed several years ago that he was suffering from dementia. In 1980, Turner founded the Cable News Network (CNN) in the city of Atlanta, in the US state of Georgia. At the time, CNN launched with 10 offices and over 200 employees. This channel was the first to broadcast news around the clock. It pioneered a new style of television news. Turner’s television empire also included, among others, the sports and entertainment channels TBS and TNT, the film channel Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and the animation channel Cartoon Network. Turner was also involved in the wrestling business and owned the World Championship Wrestling (WCW) league, whose TV shows made wrestling popular worldwide. For a time, he also owned the Hollywood film studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and its subsidiary United Artists (UA).
