Sein großer Durchbruch gelang ihm als Autor des Songs „Wild Thing”, mit dem die Band The Troggs 1966 international berühmt wurde. Die englische Gruppe landete damit auf Platz eins der „Billboard Hot 100”. Nach „Wild Thing” schrieb Taylor eine Reihe weiterer Hits, darunter „Angel of the Morning”. Er veröffentlichte auch eigene Alben und gründete im Jahr 2007 sein eigenes Independent-Label „Train Wreck Records”. 2009 brachte er darüber sein Album „Yonkers NY” heraus. 2016 wurde er für seine jahrzehntelange Karriere gewürdigt und in die „Songwriters Hall of Fame” aufgenommen.
His big breakthrough came as the author of the song “Wild Thing”, with which the band The Troggs became internationally famous in 1966.
