Borislaw Michajlow

Wie der nationale Verband mitteilte, ist die bulgarische Torwart-Legende Borislaw Michajlow im Alter von 63 Jahren nach einem Schlaganfall verstorben. Als Stammtorhüter und Kapitän führte er Bulgarien bei der Weltmeisterschaft 1994 in den USA sensationell bis ins Halbfinale. Der vierte Platz gilt bis heute als der größte Erfolg in der Geschichte des bulgarischen Fußballs. Unvergessen bleibt dabei insbesondere der überraschende 2:1-Sieg im Viertelfinale gegen den damaligen Titelverteidiger Deutschland. Insgesamt absolvierte er 102 Länderspiele für sein Land. Auch auf Vereinsebene feierte er große Erfolge, vor allem mit Lewski Sofia, mit dem er mehrfach Meister und Pokalsieger wurde. Später spielte er unter anderem in Portugal, Frankreich, England und der Schweiz, bevor er Ende der 1990er-Jahre seine Karriere beendete. Von 2005 bis 2023 stand er an der Spitze des bulgarischen Fußballverbands und war zudem Mitglied im Exekutivkomitee der UEFA. 2025 erlitt Michajlow einen schweren Schlaganfall, von dem er sich nicht mehr vollständig erholen konnte. Er lag mehrere Monate im Koma.
According to the national association, Bulgarian goalkeeping legend Borislaw Mihaylov has died at the age of 63 following a stroke. As first-choice goalkeeper and captain, he led Bulgaria to a sensational run to the semi-finals at the 1994 World Cup in the USA. That fourth-place finish is still regarded as the greatest achievement in the history of Bulgarian football. Particularly unforgettable is the surprise 2-1 victory in the quarter-finals against the then defending champions, Germany. In total, he made 102 international appearances for his country. He also enjoyed great success at club level, particularly with Levski Sofia, with whom he won multiple league and cup titles. He later played in Portugal, France, England and Switzerland, among other places, before retiring at the end of the 1990s. From 2005 to 2023, he headed the Bulgarian Football Association and was also a member of the UEFA Executive Committee. In 2025, Mihaylov suffered a severe stroke from which he was unable to make a full recovery. He was in a coma for several months.
