Willie Colón

Colón galt als Mitbegründer des Salsa, eines Musikstils mit kubanischen und puerto-ricanischen Wurzeln. Geprägt wurde der Stil Mitte der Sechzigerjahre in den Latino-Vierteln New Yorks, gemischt mit Elementen aus Jazz und Folk. In seiner mehr als 50-jährigen Karriere veröffentlichte Colón rund 40 Alben, die sich über 30 Millionen Mal verkauften. Viele der Songs sind Klassiker des Genres. Mit Salsa-Poet Rubén Blades nahm er 1978 das Album "Siembra" auf, das bis heute als die meistverkaufte Salsa-Platte der Geschichte gilt. Für seine Fans in aller Welt war er der "King of Salsa".

Colón was considered the co-founder of salsa, a musical style with Cuban and Puerto Rican roots. The style was coined in the mid-1960s in the Latino districts of New York, mixed with elements of jazz and folk. In his more than 50-year career, Colón released around 40 albums that sold over 30 million copies. Many of the songs are classics of the genre. In 1978 he recorded the album "Siembra" with salsa poet Rubén Blades, which is still considered the best-selling salsa record in history. For his fans all over the world he was the “King of Salsa”.
