Er engagierte sich viele Jahre lang für die SPD und unterstützte den Wahlkampf des späteren Bundeskanzlers Willy Brandt als dessen Redenschreiber. Der literarische Durchbruch gelang ihm im Jahr 1973 mit der Erzählung „Lenz”. Das Werk traf den Nerv der Zeit und wurde zur identitätsstiftenden Lektüre für die 68er-Generation. Zwei Jahre später folgte der Band „… schon bist du ein Verfassungsfeind“. Zentrales Thema seines Schaffens war die Stadt Berlin, deren Teilung er in dem 1982 erschienenen Roman „Der Mauerspringer” tiefgreifend analysierte. Bis ins hohe Alter blieb er produktiv; sein letzter Roman „Die Frau an der Bushaltestelle” erschien erst Ende 2025.
He was involved with the SPD for many years and supported the election campaign of the future Chancellor Willy Brandt as his speechwriter. He made his literary breakthrough in 1973 with the novella Lenz. The work struck a chord with the spirit of the times and became an identity-forming read for the 1968 generation. Two years later, he published the volume ‘... schon bist du ein Verfassungsfeind’ (You're Already an Enemy of the Constitution). The central theme of his work was the city of Berlin, whose division he analysed in depth in his 1982 novel ‘Der Mauerspringer’ (The Wall Jumper). He remained productive into his old age; his last novel, ‘Die Frau an der Bushaltestelle’ (The Woman at the Bus Stop), was published at the end of 2025.
