Die Dirigenten-Legende Michael Tilson Thomas ist im Alter von 81 Jahren verstorben. Wie das San Francisco Symphony bekannt gab, erlag er in seinem Haus in San Francisco einem Gehirntumor. Der zwölffache Grammy-Preisträger leitete etliche Orchester, darunter von 1988 bis 1995 das London Symphony Orchestra. Von 1995 bis 2020 prägte er als Chefdirigent das weltberühmte Ensemble und leitete fast 1.800 Konzerte. Die niederschmetternde Diagnose Hirnkrebs erhielt der Dirigent, Pianist und Komponist im Jahr 2021, seinen letzten Auftritt vor Publikum hatte er im April 2025 in San Francisco. Zusammen mit den angesehensten Orchestern der Welt produzierte er mehr als 140 Aufnahmen. 1987 war er Mitbegründer der New World Symphony in Miami, einem Orchester für hochbegabte Nachwuchstalente von Musikakademien.
The legendary conductor Michael Tilson Thomas has died at the age of 81. As announced by the San Francisco Symphony, he passed away at his home in San Francisco following a brain tumour. The twelve-time Grammy Award winner conducted numerous orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra from 1988 to 1995. From 1995 to 2020, he shaped the world-famous ensemble as its chief conductor and led almost 1,800 concerts. The conductor, pianist and composer received the devastating diagnosis of brain cancer in 2021; he gave his final public performance in April 2025 in San Francisco. Together with the world’s most prestigious orchestras, he produced more than 140 recordings. In 1987, he co-founded the New World Symphony in Miami, an orchestra for highly gifted young talents from music academies.
