Die Todesursache ist nicht bekannt. John Nolan war vorrangig als Theaterschauspieler tätig und wurde durch Nebenrollen in Filmprojekten bekannt. Seinen weltweiten Ruhm verdankt er seinem Neffen, dem Star-Regisseur Sir Christopher Nolan. In dessen Filmen „Batman Begins” und „The Dark Knight Rises” spielte er ein Vorstandsmitglied von Wayne Enterprises. Zudem hatte er einen kurzen Auftritt im Kriegs-Epos „Dunkirk“ und in der Serie „Person of Interest“. Zuletzt war er in der Serie „Dune: Prophecy“ zu sehen.
