Er lief für die New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets, die Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics und Washington Wizards auf. Für Aufsehen sorgte er 2013 mit seinem öffentlichen Coming-out, das er in einem Beitrag in der "Sports Illustrated" zum Thema Homosexualität tat. Former NBA player Jason Collins, who made history as the first openly gay athlete in one of the major US professional leagues, has died at the age of 47 from a brain tumour, according to his family. The former centre had revealed in September that he was undergoing treatment for a brain tumour. In December, he announced on ESPN that he was suffering from a fast-growing glioblastoma. Collins played in the NBA for 13 years. He played for the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets, the Memphis Grizzlies, the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Atlanta Hawks, the Boston Celtics and the Washington Wizards. He caused a stir in 2013 with his public coming-out, which he did in an article in ‘Sports Illustrated’ on the subject of homosexuality. In the following season, Collins played 22 times for the Brooklyn Nets.
