Durch die Rolle als Harold im Kultfilm „Harold und Maude“ (1971) wurde er berühmt. Seinen Durchbruch kam dann mit der Hauptrolle in der Komödie „The Right Stuff“ (1970). Es war jedoch die Rolle des Harold in Hal Ashbys „Harold und Maude“, die ihn unsterblich machte. In den folgenden Jahrzehnten wirkte er in zahlreichen weiteren Film- und Fernsehproduktionen mit, darunter „Electric Dreams“ (1984), „Heat“ (1995) und „Coyote Ugly“ (2000).
